Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like defenders lined up tight on receivers and a single high safety, since that alignment is most vulnerable to the wheel route beating a linebacker up the sideline. Post-snap, key the flat or curl defender's reaction to the run fake. If he bites hard on the play-action, the wheel route will have a clean release with no immediate underneath threat. Watch for a lurking linebacker or safety sinking into the middle of the field, since that defender can jump the deep dig route if he reads the quarterback's eyes quickly. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with deep safety help over the top can take away the wheel route down the sideline, forcing the quarterback to check down to the drag or deep out instead. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can disrupt this play before the play-action fake fully develops, so watch for overload blitzes or a nano blitz look pre-snap and be ready to adjust protection or get the ball out early.
Usage Tips
Use PA Drag Wheel on early downs like first or second and short when defenses are keying run out of 12 personnel Deuce Close, since the play fake needs linebacker respect to open the wheel lane.
