PA Boot Slide runs a play-action bootleg off the Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel look, pulling the QB to the right edge on a roll while the offensive line executes a slide protection to seal the backside. The route concept sends a receiver on a slide/flat route underneath as the immediate outlet, a deep out breaking to the sideline off the crossing pivot, and a corner route stemming vertically before breaking outside to stretch the defense high and wide. The primary read progression starts with the flat slide route as the checkdown, moves to the deep out sitting in the void, and finishes with the corner route as the home run shot against overplayed underneath coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch for flat defenders sitting on the slide route since that signals zone coverage and opens the deep out behind them. Key the corner or safety over the top on the corner route, if he stays deep and outside the ball is coming back down to the deep out or slide. Blitz-happy defenses that bring edge pressure from the boot side can disrupt the QB roll before routes develop, so watch defensive end alignment pre-snap. Man coverage on the underneath slide route with no safety help over the top invites a quick pick if the flat defender jumps the route. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with deep quarters help are the toughest to attack since they take away the corner route and force checkdowns to the slide.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into declaring man or zone before the snap.
Identify two high safety shells and target the corner route since the boot action pulls the flat defender and opens the deep sideline throwing lane.
Hot route the underneath slide receiver into a quicker option against Cover 3 sink to speed up your first read.
