Breakdown

PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout concept out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel that pulls the QB to the right off a run fake. The playside TE runs a deep out that sits at the sticks while the backside TE crosses the field on a corner route stacked behind a deep dig from the slot, creating a natural high low on the boundary side. The HB slides out to the flat as the checkdown and a receiver runs a short drag underneath, giving the QB a full field progression from the flat to the sit route to the deep crosser. This is a man beater built around the rollout, since the crossing routes and flat control stress man defenders trying to stay attached through traffic while the moving pocket buys the QB extra time.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check for a single high safety cheating to the boot side, since that alignment signals help over the top on the deep corner route. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the underneath drag and HB flat route will be wide open immediately. User the flat defender or nickel corner to squat on the HB slide route, this is the first answer most QBs take when the boot pressure builds. Man coverage with no safety rotation to the strong side is the biggest weakness, so disguise a late safety rotation to bracket the deep crossing route. Edge pressure from the backside that contains the rollout QB can force a rushed throw or a coverage sack, so bring a spy or contain rusher to that side if you expect this play.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs after establishing inside zone or HB Dive from the same Deuce Close set so the play fake actually freezes linebackers.

Roll with your QB using the right stick or let the design carry him and check the flat first, since the HB slide is your instant answer against blitz.

If you see man coverage pre snap with no deep safety help to the boot side, work the deep crossing TE on the corner route for an explosive gain.

Against zone shells, hitch up in the pocket and hit the sit route from the playside TE before the flat defender can widen and choke off the underneath drag.
