Motion Power is a run play out of Singleback Deuce Close 12 personnel that uses pre-snap motion to shift numbers and identify the defensive front before the snap. The blocking scheme pulls a lineman across the formation to lead through the hole while the rest of the line downblocks, creating a power gap run design behind the double tight end look. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression starts with the running back keying the puller to find the correct crease based on how the defense flows to the motion.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count, if the defense adds a defender to the box after the motion it signals they are respecting the run and will try to spill the pulling lineman. Watch linebacker alignment relative to the tight ends, stacked or crashing linebackers on the play side often mean a run blitz designed to beat the puller before he reaches his target. Post-snap, key the first unblocked defender off the edge, if he wrong-arms or spills the puller, the back needs to bounce outside instead of following the original crease. This play struggles against gap-sound fronts with disciplined linebackers who stay square and do not overpursue the motion, since that removes the natural cutback lane. Man coverage shells with aggressive edge defenders crashing down on motion can blow up the timing, so be ready to check to a pass concept from the same set if you see heavy pre-snap rotation toward the motion side.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing and confirm whether you are facing man or zone run fits before the snap.

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages.

If the defense shows heavy run blitz or crashes hard toward the motion, consider hot routing the motion tight end to sit as an outlet or checking to a bounce read.
