Breakdown

Motion Power is a run play out of Singleback Deuce Close with 12 personnel that uses a pre-snap motion to shift the numbers before the snap. The diagram shows a power blocking scheme with the offensive line stepping down and pulling to seal the point of attack, while the HB takes a downhill path off the motion action, hitting a designated crease behind the guard. This is a run play designed to overload one side of the box with double tight ends and use the motion to create a lead blocker or misdirection for the linebackers, with the primary read being the play-side crease and cutback lane based on how the defense flows.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth and gap alignment before the snap since Motion Power is designed to attack a specific crease created by the pulling linemen. If a defender chases the motion man across the formation, that confirms man coverage and you can play the run more aggressively downhill. Diagnose whether the defense sets an extra defender in the box after the motion, which signals they expect run and may bring a nano blitz or crashing defensive end. User the play-side linebacker or edge defender to plug the power lane immediately since this play struggles against defenders who stay disciplined and do not overpursue the pull blockers. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined edge defenders tend to shut this down, so if you see those shells combined with tight linebacker fits, expect the cutback lane to be the more productive path.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is running man or zone coverage based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

Call this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when you want to establish the run and set up play-action later in the drive.

If the defense stacks the box with extra defenders after seeing the motion, consider audibling to a play-action pass like PA Boot Corner Post or PA Deep Cross from the same set to punish overcommitment.

Pair Motion Power with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep from this set so the defense has to respect multiple motion-based threats and cannot key on the run every time.

Control the fullback or lead blocker manually if given the option to ensure the initial hole is sealed before working to the second level linebacker.
