Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers keying the mesh point too aggressively can be gashed on the backside cutback if the frontside blocks seal correctly. Identify the strong side safety rotation. If the safety cheats down into the box pre-snap, the defense likely has run support ready and you should consider an audible. Look for edge defenders crashing hard inside on a scrape exchange, which is a common counter to zone runs and can be exploited by bouncing the run outside if the tight end holds the edge block. Nano blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A or B gap untouched will blow this play up quickly, so identify unblocked defenders pre-snap and consider a hot route protection check or a play switch.
