Breakdown

PA Deep Read from Singleback Deuce Close (12 personnel) opens with a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before releasing four vertical stems designed to stretch the defense down the field. Both outside receivers run go routes up the numbers while the two inline tight ends split into a deep post from the left and a deep out breaker toward the right sideline, and the backside receiver runs an outlet drag to the opposite flat as a checkdown against pressure. This is a shot play built to attack single-high and man coverage, with the primary read progressing from the post breaking tight end (X) to the corner route (Y), then working to the vertical shots on the numbers if the safety commits.

Defensive Reads

Play action to a single high safety shell is the biggest weakness this play exposes, so if you see one deep defender pre-snap, sink him immediately and eliminate the post. User the deep half or deep third defender and stay on top of the vertical routes to prevent the big play, since both outside receivers are running straight go routes with no breaks. Watch for the tight end releasing on the post, this is the first read and a good linebacker spy or robber defender sitting in the middle of the field can jump this route before it clears the second level. Bring pressure off the edge with a nano blitz or contain rush to disrupt the play-action timing before the quarterback can climb the pocket and hit the deep routes. Zone coverage with two deep safeties splitting the field forces the quarterback into a longer progression, so playing patient in your drops and not biting on the play fake takes away the easy explosive gain.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and long when you need an explosive gain and the defense is likely to sit back in coverage rather than blitz.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. If you see a single high safety, throw the post read tight end early before he can rotate over the top.

Against two high shells, work the corner breaking route on the right since it sits in the void created by the safety rotating down for run support.

Pair this play with PA Deep Cross or PA Boot Corner Post in the same set so the defense has to respect multiple deep shots off similar play-action mesh points.

If the pass rush wins fast off the edge, dump it to the drag route as a built in checkdown rather than forcing the deep read into pressure.
