Overview

The Benkert Offense is a 267 play specialty book that runs deeper than 80 percent of the game's 26 offensive specialty playbooks, and almost all of that volume is pointed in one direction: Shotgun. With 162 Shotgun plays spread across 10 different sets, this is a book built to live in one alignment family and still look different on every snap. You are not cycling through gimmick formations to find a concept. You are staying in Shotgun, changing personnel and spacing between 11, 12 and 13 groupings, and letting the sheer number of sets do the disguising for you. The concept list backs that up with Pass Play, Play Action, Spot, Flat, Motion and dedicated Cover 3 Beater material, which is exactly the mix you want when your primary alignment is a passing alignment.

Underneath the Shotgun core sits a legitimate downhill package that a lot of pass-heavy books simply do not carry. Singleback contributes 51 plays across 4 sets (19 percent), and then the heavy stuff stacks on top: I Form at 27 plays across 2 sets, Strong I at 12 plays in a single set, and Goal Line Offense at 12 plays in its own set. That is 51 plays of two back and goal line football, with 23, 21 and 22 personnel available to support it. Power, Power Run, Counter, Toss and Dive concepts are all present, and the sample plays tell the story plainly: FB Dive appears out of both I Form and Strong I, 26 Duo runs from Singleback, and Boomerang HB Off Tackle gives you a run action with built in play side movement. Hail Mary is included as a 3 play, 2 set afterthought, which is exactly what it should be.

Choosing the Benkert Offense over another book gets you Shotgun depth without surrendering the ability to end a game on the ground. Books that hit 61 percent Shotgun usually have nothing behind it but more Shotgun; books with real I Form and Strong I content usually cannot give you 10 Shotgun sets to hide behind. This one does both, and the 267 play count means your audible package can be built entirely out of concepts you actually like rather than whatever the book happens to carry. The game plan it supports is a spread base with a Goal Post style shot built into the Shotgun sets, Spot and Flat concepts as your money throws against man and zone respectively, and a Power, Counter and Dive package you flip to inside the five and in four minute situations.

Scheme Fit

The Benkert Offense wants a quarterback who is comfortable reading a full field from Shotgun and accurate enough to hit Spot and Flat windows, with at least enough athleticism to make the play action rollouts credible. Because the heavy package leans on FB Dive, Power and Toss, you need a lead blocking fullback and offensive linemen with real run block power and impact blocking, plus a tight end room that can survive 13 personnel and still release on Motion concepts. Pick this book if you want to call a spread passing game 60 percent of the time from one alignment family, prefer disguising concepts through sets rather than through exotic formations, and still want to close out games under center rather than throwing on every snap.

Strengths

  • Ten Shotgun sets across 162 plays means you can build a full audible package inside one alignment family, so every call starts from the same look and your opponent gets no pre-snap read off formation alone.
  • The Shotgun volume covers both Spot and Flat concepts plus explicit Cover 3 Beater material, giving you a dedicated answer to single high shells without leaving your base alignment or burning a timeout to find one.
  • Fifty one plays of two back and goal line football (I Form 27, Strong I 12, Goal Line Offense 12) with 23, 21 and 22 personnel available means your short yardage and four minute package is real, not two token dives, and FB Dive is carried out of both I Form and Strong I.
  • Personnel spans 23 through 11, so formation subs let you run the same Singleback and Shotgun spacing with a heavy 13 grouping or a spread 11 grouping and force the defense to guess whether the call is 26 Duo or a Spot concept.
  • Play Action and Motion are both listed concepts inside a book this Shotgun heavy, so run commitment out of Singleback and I Form actually sells the play action rollouts rather than getting ignored.

Weaknesses

  • At 61 percent Shotgun, a user who scouts formation tendency will simply sit in his Shotgun coverage rules, and the 4 percent Strong I and 4 percent Goal Line Offense shares are too small to punish him with unless you commit to them early.
  • Strong I and Goal Line Offense each have exactly one set, so once you tip into heavy personnel your concept pool shrinks fast and the defense can crowd the box knowing Power, Toss and Dive are most of what is left.
  • There is no Pistol, no Wildcat and no under center empty or alternate gun family listed, so quarterback run and misdirection outside of Motion and Counter has to come from hot routes and scrambling rather than from the play art.
  • I Form carries only 27 plays across 2 sets, which is thin for a book that otherwise sells a downhill identity, so your between the tackles variety off a true two back look is limited compared to a dedicated power book.
  • The 3 play Hail Mary allotment across 2 sets is situational only, and with no true four vertical heavy alternate family in the spread, your end of half and desperation menu is narrower than the overall 267 play count suggests.

Usage Tips

Build your audible package out of three or four of the ten Shotgun sets and keep them in the same personnel grouping so you can flip between Spot, Flat and Cover 3 Beater concepts on any down without a substitution tell, this is your first and second down base.

Reach for Singleback on second and medium and early third and short, where its 51 plays across 4 sets give you 26 Duo and Power Run looks that still keep three receiver spacing and hot route access on the boundary.

Save I Form and Strong I for four minute offense and anything inside the five, and note that FB Dive is carried out of both, so alternating between the two sets keeps the same call from looking the same twice.

Use Goal Line Offense only inside the two or on fourth and one, then motion a tight end from the 13 grouping to force the defense to declare its edge before you pick a side with Power or Toss.

Hit Play Action and Motion calls out of Shotgun immediately after a productive Singleback run series, since that is when the linebackers are sitting on Counter and Dive and your play action rollouts get the cleanest look.
