Normal Y Off Close is the compressed cousin of standard Shotgun Normal Y Off. You still get 11 personnel with the tight end offset behind the tackle, but the split receivers are tucked in tight to the formation, which shrinks the field horizontally and forces defenses to declare their leverage before the snap. That tight alignment is the whole point: bunched splits create natural rub and switch releases, make man coverage announce itself immediately (defenders stacked inside the numbers), and give your slot and Y easy access to the flat, the seam, and the boundary corner off a single vertical stem.
The offset Y is the swing piece. He can chip and leak, run the wheel off jet motion (Fk Jet Y Wheel, Fake Jet Y Wheel, Mtn Angle Y Wheel), attack the sticks on Y-Stick Dig and Y-Sail, or stay in as a sixth blocker on the inside zone and read option calls. Because he starts behind the line, defenses cannot press him, so linebackers and safeties have to widen or chase, and that late leverage decision is where you win with angle routes and wheels out of the backfield.
Where this set really separates from the rest of the Shotgun tree is the RPO volume. RPO Glance Post, RPO Peek Spot, RPO Alert Out, RPO Zone Alert Omaha, RPO Zone Peek Glance, RPO Zone Snag, RPO Zone Stick, RPO Zone Omaha Hitch and RPO Peek Stick let you run inside zone with a built-in throw off a single defender read, so you never have to guess against a heavy box. Pair that with Power Read, Read Option, Read Counter Bash and Zone Fake Jet for gadget looks, plus Mtn TE Middle Screen, Cheat TE Screen and Empty Mtn Jailbreak Screen to punish blitz-happy users, and you have a set that stresses run fits and coverage rules from the same alignment. Tight splits also mean your best slot receiver (SLWR tag) is aligned inside against a nickel or linebacker on most snaps, which is the matchup you want to hunt on Mtn Snag Curls and Mesh Spot.
Read the box before you snap. Six or more in the box with single high is your RPO Zone Peek Glance and RPO Alert Out cue, while a light box means hand off inside zone or Cheat Inside Zone and take the free yards.
Motion the slot or use jet action on Zone Fake Jet and PA Jet Sweep to force the defense to rotate, then read the flat defender: if he widens, the Y wheel or HB swing is open behind him.
On third and medium, live in Y-Stick Dig, Y Stick and Mtn Snag Curls. Hot route the outside receiver to a slant or drag if you diagnose man to add a rub off the compressed split.
Against zone-heavy users, Mtn Switch Corner and Wheel Switch attack the seam and the boundary void created when the corner squeezes the tight split.
When you see repeat blitz pressure, go straight to Mtn TE Middle Screen or Empty Mtn Jailbreak Screen. One big screen resets the defensive user and reopens your inside zone and RPO game.
In the red zone, Redzone Scissors and Cheat Flat X Post use the tight splits to create crossing leverage in a shortened field where man coverage has nowhere to hide.
