Defensive Reads

Identify two deep safeties pre snap, since this concept is designed specifically to attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with the crossing corner and drag combo. Watch the flat defender or cornerback at the snap. If he sinks with the crosser, the corner route behind him is the immediate answer. Key the deep half or deep quarter safety on the play side. If he widens with the corner route, the underneath drag will settle into the vacated window. This play struggles against man coverage with a deep third safety over the top, since the corner route has no natural separation leverage against a trailing defender with help. Beware a user controlled lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the throwing lane of the crossing drag route, since that defender can jump the underneath read if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use this play in the redzone or on any down where you need a defined high low read against two deep safety shells, since the corner and drag combo isolates the flat defender and the deep half safety at the same time.

Check the cornerback depth before the snap. If he is playing outside leverage with no safety help over the top, the corner route wins immediately.

Hot route the backside dig into a deeper post if you diagnose Cover 4 pre snap, since that puts extra vertical stress on the safety carrying the corner route.
