Mtn Dash Flood is a three level flood concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel designed to attack one side of the field with vertical spacing. The play stretches a single side with a deep clearing route, an intermediate flood route, and an underneath flat option, forcing a single defender to declare on multiple thresholds. This is a zone beater at its core, punishing curl to flat drops and any coverage that leans to help over the top, though it also holds up against man coverage if the deep route wins early. The primary read progression starts at the deep flood window, works down to the intermediate sit route, and finishes with the checkdown flat route if the safety rotates over the top.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender first, if he widens with the underneath route the intermediate window opens up immediately for an easy completion. Watch for a curl to flat zone drop from the linebacker, this play is built to beat that exact rotation by stacking three receivers on top of each other. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap since the deep flood route can high low the deep quarter or third defender if he cheats to help elsewhere. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is a green light to take the deep shot on the first read without hesitating. Be alert for a corner blitz or nano blitz off the flood side edge, if the outside numbers are stacked pre-snap get the ball out on the quick flat option instead of holding for the deep route.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shaded to the flood side signals trouble and you should be ready to move off your first read quickly.

Use your hot routes to widen the flat route into a true swing if the defense is showing zone with a linebacker sitting in the throwing lane.

This play hits best on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more willing to sit in zone drops instead of bringing pressure.

Pair Mtn Dash Flood with RPO Zone Snag or RPO Peek Stick earlier in a drive so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the vertical flood shot from the same formation.

Against user defenders who jump the flat route, hitch the intermediate route for a half second longer since the window behind them will stay open.

If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, prioritize the intermediate flood route since the deep shot will likely be capped.
