Exit PA Smash is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun 11 personnel that layers a smash combo (corner and flat) on one side with an exit route working behind it, designed to punish defenses selling out on the run fake. The play-action freezes linebackers and beats aggressive underneath coverage while the corner route stretches the deep quarter, making it an effective man and zone beater depending on the leverage of the boundary corner. The primary read starts with the corner route against a single high safety, then works down to the flat or exit route underneath if the deep shot is not there.
Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap since Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells leave the corner route in a favorable one on one with limited deep help. Watch the flat defender at the snap, since a hard trigger toward the run fake opens the smash concept immediately for the underneath completion. Key the boundary corner leverage, if he sits low expecting the flat route the corner throw over the top wins every time. Beware two deep safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4, since the corner route sits in the deep half defender's lane and invites a user pick if thrown late. Look for user linebackers spying the quarterback on the play fake, since a delayed sell on the run action can bait them into vacating the shallow zone for the exit route.
Use this on early downs or in play-action friendly counts like second and short where run fits are expected, since the ball fake needs linebackers biting to open the window underneath.
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks such as Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the corner route wins big over a hard flat defender or a corner staying at depth.
Hot route the flat defender into a shallow drag if you see a Cover 2 shell with two deep safeties, since the corner route will be capped by the deep half defender.
Pair this call with Fk Jet Y Wheel or PA Jet Sweep earlier in a drive so the run fake keys off similar motion and formation, making linebackers hesitate on the next play-action shot.
Take a hard play-action drop and climb the pocket if the corner route is covered, since the exit route and flat combo will still be open against overcommitted zone defenders.
