Breakdown

Power Read is a shotgun run play out of Normal Y Off Close with 11 personnel, built around a zone read blocking scheme up front and a give or keep decision for the QB off the backside end. The diagram shows the RB running a lateral path to the left behind the line while the QB reads the unblocked edge defender, with the offensive line executing power blocking to seal running lanes inside. This is a run play with no pass concept attached, so it does not beat man or zone coverage directly, it wins based on defensive front alignment and box count. The primary read progression is the QB keying the read defender at the edge: give the ball if he crashes down the line, pull and keep if he stays wide to take away the RB.

Defensive Reads

Watch the edge defender assigned to the mesh point, if he sits wide and stays disciplined he takes away the QB keep and forces the give to the RB into a loaded box. Check linebacker depth before the snap, linebackers stacked tight to the line signal a run blitz that can blow up both the give and keep option. Look for safeties rotating down into the box post-snap, this indicates run support that can outnumber the blocking scheme on either side. A crashing edge defender who commits hard to the RB opens a running lane for the QB keep, so defenses must maintain edge discipline to shut this down. User-controlled defenders spying the mesh point or crashing down the line late can disrupt the read, so watch for manual jumps at the snap that override standard defensive assignments.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and count the box, this play thrives against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.

Identify whether the defense is showing a run blitz or edge crash look before the snap, since a hard crashing edge defender is your green light to pull the ball and keep as the QB.

Use this out of Normal Y Off Close on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest against your RPO Zone and RPO Peek Stick calls from the same set.

Pair Power Read with Inside Zone and Read Counter Bash in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key run direction based on formation alone.

Avoid calling this into stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages since the play lacks a built in pass option to punish extra defenders in the box.
