Breakdown

Mtn Snag Curls is a Snag concept pass play out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close with 11 personnel. Pre-snap motion brings the flanker across the formation on a shallow drag toward the boundary, while the two outside receivers run vertical stems that break into curls sitting down at the same depth, and the slot receiver runs the snag corner route working underneath into the void the curls create. The offensive line stays in to protect with the back checking release, making this a classic Cover 3 beater that stresses the curl to flat defender and the deep third corner with a high low read. The primary read progression starts with the snag corner route against a hard flat defender, moves to the two curls sitting in the seams if the underneath defenders widen, and comes back to the shallow drag motion man as the checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender on the snag side, if he widens hard to take away the corner route the curls will be open behind him in the void. Key the middle linebacker depth before the snap, shallow drops signal zone match coverage that can jump the curls if you hold the ball too long. If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap and rotates down into Cover 2 or Cover 4 after the snap, the drag motion becomes your safety valve since the underneath defenders will be spread thin. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk technique in the middle of the field are the biggest threat to the curls, look off the initial read to bait the lurk before coming back. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be exploited by rubbing the corner route defender with the curl route stems, creating natural traffic that frees up the snag corner underneath.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and can key the curls against a lurking linebacker.

Attack Cover 3 shells by reading the flat defender on the snag corner route first, if he sinks with the corner throw the curl behind him for an easy pickup.

This play pairs well with Mtn Inside Zone and Mtn HB Angle in the same set since the run action and the angle route out of the backfield create similar backfield looks that keep linebackers honest before you come back to this passing concept.

On third and medium situations the curls sitting down at the sticks make this a reliable conversion play, especially against zone heavy defenses that like to sit in Cover 3 or Cover 4 match.

If you see a Cover 2 shell with two deep safeties, hot route one of the curls into a deeper dig or use the drag motion as your first read since the flat will be crowded by the cornerback and safety rotation.
