Breakdown

Empty Mtn Spot Replace comes out of a 5 wide Empty Shotgun look with the back on the field, and pre-snap motion brings the flanker in to a stack near the slot for a spot concept alignment. The near side runs the classic Spot combo with the tight end sitting on a corner route, the back and motion man working an angle/flat cut underneath, and the frontside outside receiver clearing vertically to hold the corner and safety. On the backside, the X receiver runs a deep crossing route (mtn cross) into the void left by the spot action while the far outside receiver runs a comeback along the sideline, giving you a true zone beater against Cover 3 with a horizontal stretch. Primary progression is corner route to flat/angle route underneath, then working backside to the deep crosser if the middle of the field opens up against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if you see a single high safety rotate hard to the trips or spot side, this is your Cover 3 or Cover 1 look and the spot concept will be live. Watch the flanker motion, if a defender mirrors him all the way across the formation you are facing man coverage and should key the linebacker or slot corner assigned to the angle route for a potential mismatch. Post-snap, key the underneath zone defender near the spot concept, if he sits on the flat or angle route the corner route will be open behind him, if he bails to the corner route the flat is wide open. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane, if they jump the angle route early, the backside deep crosser becomes the answer since the middle of the field opens up. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since the back is heavily involved in the spot concept a hot blitz can be picked up by working the ball to the angle route quickly before the pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and should lean on the angle route as your first read against a linebacker in space.

Against Cover 3, trust the spot concept to flood the underneath zone defender and hit the corner route sitting behind him before he can react.

This play shines on second and medium to third and short because the underneath flat and angle routes are high percentage completions that convert quickly.

Pair this call with RPO Zone Snag or RPO Zone Stick earlier in a drive so the defense respects the quick game, then hit them with the deep crosser on the backside when they crash down on run support or spot routes.

If the user drops a defender into the shallow flat to jump the angle route, immediately reset to the deep crossing route on the backside since it is designed to work versus that exact rotation.
