Defensive Reads

Read the vertical seam route first since it stresses the deep third defender in Cover 3 and forces a decision on the safety. Watch for the flat defender sitting on the tight end's flat route, this tells you if the defense is in a hard zone drop or man matching underneath. If linebackers are playing shallow with tight depth pre-snap, expect a mesh clog and be ready to work through traffic to the corner route instead. Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can bracket the vertical seam route, so switch your first read to the flat and mesh combo. Man coverage with a single high safety is vulnerable to the mesh crosser rubbing off defenders, watch for a user spy or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field to jump this route.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the spot concept gives you an easy sit route in the flat against zone coverage.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 so prioritize the mesh crosser working across the middle.

Against man coverage hot route the flat route to a quick out if the defender is playing tight so you can beat the pick immediately.

Pair this with Mtn Slot Shallow Cross or Y-Stick Dig in the same set to keep defenses guessing between mesh concepts and stick concepts out of the same formation.

If the user jumps the vertical seam route with a lurking linebacker, reset your eyes to the mesh crosser since it will be wide open underneath.
