Breakdown

Y-Sail out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close is a classic sail concept built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with a high low read on the sideline. The TE runs the sail route from the closed side up the seam and out to the corner, the outside receiver on the boundary runs a corner route stretching the deep third, and the inside slot runs a flat route underneath while the backside receiver runs a quick out. The primary read progression is corner route to sail to flat, working high to low on the frontside to stress the flat defender and deep half or third defender in a classic triangle read.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the underneath flat route the sail sitting behind him becomes wide open in the intermediate zone Key the deep half or deep third defender on the play side, if he stays flat footed reading the quarterback the corner route will clear over the top for an explosive gain Against Cover 2 look for the cornerback to squat on the flat route, this is the exact leverage error this concept is designed to exploit with the sail sitting behind him User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk technique underneath can jump the sail route, so if the user is clearly playing that window progress to the corner route or the backside out Man coverage with no help over the top gets attacked by the corner route working vertically, but disciplined match zone or a robber defender sitting in the middle of the field can take away both the sail and the flat, so be ready to check down or reset the play

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or one, since this concept punishes Cover 2 by putting the corner defender in conflict between the flat route and the sail route sitting behind him

Against Cover 3 look for the sail route to settle in the open window between the deep third defender and the underneath flat defender, this is your primary throw if the corner sinks too deep

Use the backside quick out as a hot route answer versus man coverage or if the defense rolls a safety over the top late, it gives you a quick release valve outside the numbers

Run this on early downs or second and medium to keep defenses honest before mixing in Reload PA Deep Sail or Mtn Dash Flood from the same set to hit the exact same landmarks off different action

Pair this with RPO Zone Snag or RPO Peek Stick on early downs to condition the defense to respect the run action, then come back to Y-Sail to hit the sail window once linebackers start creeping up
