Breakdown

Y-Sail out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close is a classic three-level sail concept built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. The Y (TE) runs the sail route from the middle stack out to the flat, the outside receiver on that side pushes vertical on a deep corner route to clear out the corner, and the backside receiver runs a deep dig across the middle while the other backside receiver runs a quick out at the sticks. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route to see if it stretches the cornerback and safety, then works down to the Y-Sail flat route underneath, with the backside dig as the answer against zone drops or when the corner route occupies the deep defenders.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows two deep safeties or a single high safety, since Y-Sail is designed to exploit Cover 2 zone seams and Cover 3 flat defenders. Watch the flat defender's initial break, if he sits and reads quarterback eyes instead of widening, the sail route will be covered and you need to progress to the corner route or backside dig immediately. Man coverage with no help over the top is a bad matchup for the offense here since the sail route lacks natural rub help, look for the corner route to win on a speed mismatch instead. Be alert for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow crossing area, they can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. A disguised blitz with only four defenders in coverage forces a quick decision, key the outside linebacker or slot defender pre-snap for blitz indicators and get the ball out on the sail route before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two safeties deep this is a prime Cover 2 beater since the corner route will climb over the cornerback and into the seam between the safeties.

Against Cover 3, key the flat defender, if he widens with the Y-Sail route the underneath window opens for the dig coming across the middle.

Use this on third and medium to third and long situations since the dig and corner routes need time to develop and the sticks out route gives a safe checkdown.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Stick or RPO Alert Out earlier in a series to get the defense reacting to quick game, then hit them with Y-Sail once they start jumping underneath routes.

If the user drops a linebacker into the shallow flat to jump the Y-Sail route, hot route the outside receiver on a fade to counter aggressive underneath coverage and throw the deep corner instead.
