Breakdown

Jet Touch Pass is a quick perimeter throw out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close that puts a receiver in jet motion across the formation before the snap, then throws a quick touch pass to that same motion man as he releases outside toward the flat. The diagram shows the motion man crossing the backfield and continuing on an outside release path while the line holds up in a quick pass protection look, essentially replacing the jet sweep handoff with a quick pass to the same space. This is a run-pass mismatch play designed to beat fast flow defenses and overaggressive edge defenders, with the primary read being the jet motion receiver in the flat and a checkdown or secondary route as backup if the flow defender squats on the touch pass.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a defender spying or shadowing the jet motion pre-snap, since that shows the defense is trained to respect this exact concept. If the flow linebacker or slot corner sits outside instead of chasing the motion, that is a sign the defense has this play scouted and will jump the touch pass route. Cover 3 with a hard-flowing curl-flame defender is the toughest shell against this play since that defender can undercut the touch pass throw. Man coverage with outside corners playing off leaves the throwing window open, so look for soft coverage on the perimeter before calling this. Post-snap, key the flat defender's first two steps. If he bites on run action, the touch pass is open, but if he stays patient and reads the quarterback's eyes, be ready to pull it back or check down.

Usage Tips

Snap the ball right as the jet motion man crosses the backfield to sell run action and freeze the linebackers before the touch pass releases.

Use this against defenses that key hard on jet sweep motion, since their flow and edge defenders will overpursue and open up the touch pass window.

Throw with touch and lead the receiver toward the sideline so he can turn upfield without breaking stride, especially versus Cover 3 or Cover 1 defenses with aggressive corners.

Pair this with PA Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from the same set so the defense has to respect both the actual handoff and the touch pass off identical pre-snap motion.

Best used on early downs or short yardage near the sideline where a free access throw into space can pick up an easy 4 to 6 yards without much risk.
