Breakdown

Escape is a play action flood concept out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close with 11 personnel. Off the play fake, the outside receiver to the flooded side runs a corner route, the TE releases underneath into the flat, and the inside slot works a shallow out crossing the field, creating a high low low stretch on one side of the field while both backside receivers clear vertically with a go and a seam to hold the safeties. The primary read progression starts with the corner route on any Cover 2 shell, then works down to the flat route on Cover 3 or if the corner is capped, making this both a Cover 3 and Cover 2 beater.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre snap, this signals Cover 2 and you should hammer the corner route over the top before the safety can rotate over. A single high safety with corners playing off indicates Cover 3, in this case the flat route and shallow out become your friend against the underneath zone drops. Key the flat defender, if he sinks with the corner route the flat is wide open, if he sits low the corner has space on the sideline. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the corner and go routes since the flood forces a linebacker or nickel to cover the flat in space. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow out zone, disciplined zone drops here can bait the quarterback into a turnover if the flat read is thrown too early.

Use this on early downs when you have shown inside zone or play action from this same formation to keep linebackers honest on the run fake.

Check the pre snap safety alignment, if you see two high safeties sitting deep, prioritize the corner route since it attacks the seam between the corner and safety.

Against a single high safety look, work the flat route quickly since the flood underneath should have room versus Cover 3 rotation.

Pair Escape with Mtn PA Boot or Reload PA Deep Sail in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on your play action tendencies from this set.

If the user drops a defender into the shallow out lane, hot route your backside seam runner to sit down for a quick outlet against zone coverage.
