Defensive Reads
Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap and post-snap since his crash or contain decision dictates whether the QB gives or pulls. Man coverage with an aggressive edge defender who stays home on the QB shuts this down quickly, so look for a disciplined end who does not bite on the mesh action. Overloaded fronts or a spy linebacker aligned inside the tackle box can blow up both the give and pull options simultaneously. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill on the mesh point, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the option instead of respecting play-action. Zone coverage shells with linebackers sitting at depth tend to overcommit to the run fit, opening cutback lanes if the HB reads the interior correctly.
Usage Tips
Check the alignment of the backside defensive end before the snap since he is the actual defender the QB will read after the snap.
