Breakdown

RPO Zone Alert Omaha is a run-pass option built out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close that pairs an inside zone run with an alert passing concept keyed off the second level defenders. The Omaha tag gives the quarterback a hitch or quick access throw to attack light box counts and off man coverage, while the run action stresses gap integrity if the defense stays home. Primary read progression starts with the numbers in the box: if the count favors the run, hand it off, if a defender crashes down or the alert receiver's defender flies upfield, pull and throw the pre-determined route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safety alignment before the snap, two high shells generally mean lighter boxes and favor the run action. Track the play side linebacker depth, if he sits at normal depth and does not cheat toward the line the run is live, but if he creeps up expect the quarterback to pull and throw. Identify off man versus press on the alert receiver's defender, off coverage with a cushion is where this play hurts defenses most. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the mesh point or sitting in a shallow zone lurk, that is the biggest threat to shut down the quick throw. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 with a fast flowing linebacker crew, the run fit tightens and the RPO throw becomes the better option since underneath defenders will flow hard to the mesh.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and count defenders inside the tackles versus your blockers to decide whether you are hunting run or throw.

Use this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short since it keeps the offense balanced and does not tip your hand.

If the defense shows a heavy run blitz look with linebackers creeping up, lean pass and get the ball out on the alert route quickly before the second level closes.

Pair this with RPO Zone Peek Glance or RPO Zone Stick in the same set so the defense has to respect multiple RPO branches off similar formations and cannot sit on one key.

Against man coverage on the perimeter, favor the throw since the Omaha alert route is designed to win against off man leverage, but against tight zone shells trust the run fit instead.
