Breakdown

Cheat TE Screen is a screen pass out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close (11 personnel) that uses a motioned receiver going in a jet path behind the offensive line to sell run action while the offensive line sets a screen wall for the TE. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a vertical clear release up the sideline to pull the corner and safety off, while the TE slips out behind a staggered wall of three linemen releasing to the flat, creating a numbers advantage in space. Primary read progression is immediate: check the TE screen first, and if the underneath defenders bite on the run fake or crash down, deliver the throw to the TE behind his blockers before working outside for room to run.

Defensive Reads

Watch the Mike linebacker at the snap: if he steps up to fill run gaps or blitzes, the TE screen lane opens immediately behind the OL wall. Check safety depth pre-snap, single high shells with safeties sneaking toward the box get gashed by this concept once the vertical clear-out pulls the corner. Man coverage on the TE (especially from a linebacker) is a soft spot since the OL wall creates natural picks in space. Zone coverage with disciplined linebackers sitting at the sticks and reading screen action can sniff this out, particularly if the defense has a designated screen spy. Watch for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the ball on the initial run fake, that lurk tendency is exactly what this play is designed to punish if the blockers get out ahead of the throw.

Usage Tips

Call this play against aggressive defenses that bring linebackers downhill on run fakes or blitz packages that send extra rushers, since the screen exploits vacated underneath zones. Use it on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to keep defenses honest and set up misdirection later in the drive. Pre-snap, check for stacked box looks or Mike linebacker cheating toward the line, that is your green light to fire this out fast. If the defense shows soft zone with linebackers sitting at depth, hot route the clearing receiver into a quick option route instead of a pure vertical to keep the picture clean. Pair this with Cheat TE Angle and Zone Fake Jet from the same set to build a series that looks identical pre-snap but attacks different spots, forcing defenders to hesitate on their run-pass reads.
