Breakdown

Cheat Inside Zone lines up out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close with 11 personnel and uses pre-snap motion across the formation to shift numbers before the snap. The offensive line executes a standard inside zone blocking scheme, working combo blocks at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off the linebackers. This is a pure zone run play designed to let the running back read the natural cutback lanes created by double teams, with the primary read progression starting at the playside double team and working to the backside cutback if the alley gets clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are crashing downhill immediately at the snap it signals a run blitz that can be countered by bouncing outside. Check for a defender shadowing the motion man, if nobody follows the motion it is likely zone coverage which usually means the box count stays consistent for the run fit. Look for safety rotation toward the strength of the formation, a late safety cheat down often means the defense is selling run support and leaving the cutback lane thinner. Nano blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can beat this play if the offensive line does not get help, so keep an eye on unblocked edge defenders. Stacked fronts with linebackers sitting tight to the line often clog the interior cutback, so identify if the defense is playing a 4-3 under front before committing to the primary gap.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the defense honest and set up your RPO Zone Stick and RPO Zone Snag looks later in the drive.

If the defense shows a stacked box with eight or more defenders, consider hot routing into a play-action shot off the same look instead of running into a loaded front.

Pair this with RPO Zone Alert Omaha and RPO Zone Peek Glance from the same set so linebackers hesitate on run fits, opening bigger cutback lanes.

Trust the double team at the point of attack and delay your cut so the blocks can develop before committing to a gap.
