RPO Zone Peek Glance is a run pass option out of the Shotgun Normal Y Off Close set that pairs an inside zone run scheme with a quick glance route and a peek route from the slot. The quarterback reads the play side second level defender: if the linebacker sits or crashes down to fill the zone run lane, pull and throw the glance or peek behind him for an explosive gain. This is a true dual threat RPO that punishes both run blitzers and zone defenders who abandon their throwing lanes, with the primary progression running from the peek key defender to the glance window before checking down to the run.
Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap since a fast downhill trigger toward the line signals he is vacating the glance throwing lane Check safety alignment pre-snap because a single high safety shell often leaves the peek route open against man coverage on the backside Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the quarterback, which tells you the run pass option is being respected and you should trust the handoff Man coverage with tight press corners on the outside receivers is a green light to attack the glance route since it wins quickly against off leverage Zone blitzes with the linebacker crashing hard off the edge will shut down the run fit but often leave the peek route uncovered in the vacated zone
Check the box count before the snap and if you see six or more defenders stacked in the box, plan to throw off the read instead of forcing the handoff
Identify your peek key defender immediately after the snap since his run fit decision dictates whether you pull or hand off
Use this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep defenses honest and set up heavier run calls later in the series
Motion the slot receiver pre-snap if available to get a free coverage read on man versus zone before the ball is snapped
Pair this with RPO Peek Spot and RPO Zone Stick in the same drive so defenders cannot sit on the glance window without opening up other RPO concepts
