Breakdown

Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close (11 personnel) shows two crossing shallow routes underneath from the left side, a corner route from the outside receiver on the right, a flat route from the inline TE, and a middle read (spot) route breaking to the sit zone at the sticks. The mesh combo occupies underneath man defenders and linebackers while the corner route stretches the deep third, making this a strong Cover 3 beater that also holds up against man coverage due to the natural pick action created by the crossing routes. Primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers underneath, works to the spot/hook route in the middle if a zone defender vacates, and finishes with the corner route as the deep shot if the cornerback bites on the underneath traffic.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of both underneath defenders on the mesh crossers, if either linebacker trails flat-footed through the pick you have an easy throw to the trailing crosser. Key the cornerback aligned over the corner route receiver, aggressive man technique or tight press alignment signals he will get picked off by the mesh action underneath. Identify the deep safety shell before the snap, a two-high shell forces you to trust the spot route in the seam rather than the corner shot, while single-high invites the corner route as the primary answer. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, this is the biggest threat to the mesh concept and usually signals a jump-the-route attempt on the underneath crossers. Sim or zone blitz pressure that brings extra rushers off the edge will collapse the pocket quickly, so check protection or be ready to climb the pocket and get the ball out on the first available crosser.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check for single-high safety looks since the corner route on the outside is a direct answer to Cover 3 rotation and will win over the top if the corner sinks with the mesh traffic.

Use the mesh crossers as your first read against man coverage because the natural rub created by the two shallow routes forces defenders to fight through picks, creating easy separation for user-controlled defenders to lose.

If the defense shows Cover 2 or Tampa 2, hot route the spot route to sit right at the intermediate window between the linebackers and the deep safeties instead of forcing the corner throw.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Spot or RPO Alert Out in the same set to keep the defense guessing between run fits and the mesh concept, since both share similar backfield action and formation tendencies.

Best called on second or third and medium since the mesh depth and spot route sit right in the sticks range, giving you a high floor completion plus a home run shot on the corner route.
