Overview

Superstar QB Field General is a 195 play offensive book that hands you a Shotgun heavy passing engine with just enough downhill run support to keep a defense honest. Shotgun accounts for 108 plays (55%) spread across 8 sets, which is more Shotgun set variety than almost anything else in this book, and it is where the play action, spot, flat and Cover 3 beater concepts live. Singleback adds 36 plays (18%) across 3 sets for tempo and one back run game, and Pistol contributes 21 plays (11%) across 3 sets as the middle ground where you can still show run and pull the ball on a play action rollout without giving away the snap distance.

Scheme Fit

This book wants a mobile, accurate quarterback who can read a rotating safety and extend plays on play action rollouts out of Shotgun and Pistol, since that is where 79% of the plays live. You also need a back with real receiving ability to make the flat and spot concepts function against man coverage, plus a fullback and big bodied interior blockers to make the I Form, Strong I and Goal Line Offense gap runs worth calling. Pick Superstar QB Field General if you want a quarterback centered passing scheme with a credible short yardage package, and pass on it if your roster is built around a downhill zone run game.

Strengths

  • Shotgun at 108 plays across 8 sets gives you enough distinct sets to build a full audible package that never leaves the formation, so you can flip strength, motion a slot across and stay in the same personnel while the defense keeps guessing at run or pass
  • The play action and Cover 3 beater concepts out of Shotgun and Pistol pair with a mobile passer for rollouts that beat single high looks, and sample calls like DBL Post and DBL Outs give you a vertical answer and a sideline answer from a similar look
  • Pistol at 21 plays across 3 sets is the disguise formation most 55% Shotgun books do not carry, letting you run Counter and Power Run downhill from a pass posture and then flood the flat off the same backfield alignment
  • Personnel range from 10 (1 RB, 0 TE, 4 WR) to 23 (2 RB, 3 TE, 0 WR) means one book covers empty spacing and jumbo goal line, and formation subs let you sneak a receiving back or a slot type into heavier groupings
  • Goal Line Offense at 9 plays plus I Form and Strong I gives you a real short yardage identity with FB Dive and HB Blunt Dive, so you are not forced into a Shotgun draw on fourth and one

Weaknesses

  • With 55% of the book in Shotgun, a good user will sit in a Shotgun specific game plan and pattern match your route combos after two or three drives, since your under center calls are only 54 plays total across Singleback, I Form, Strong I and Goal Line Offense
  • I Form is a single set with 12 plays and Strong I is a single set with 6, so your two back power run game is extremely predictable once an opponent sees the formation come out and can commit an extra defender to the strong side
  • Hail Mary at 3 plays across 2 sets is situational only and adds nothing to your normal down and distance planning, so the real usable book is smaller than 195 suggests
  • The concept list is pass and gap run oriented (Power, Counter, Toss, Dive) with no wide zone or heavy option shell, meaning defenses that gap fit and blitz interior gaps can wreck your run calls before the pull arrives
  • Goal Line Offense being one set means your red zone run looks are limited, and opponents who stack the box on 23 personnel force you into Shotgun throws in tight windows

Usage Tips

Build your primary audible package entirely from three of the eight Shotgun sets so you can cycle spot, flat and Cover 3 beater concepts on any down without a personnel change, then keep one Singleback set in the package for tempo runs on first and second down

Use Pistol on second and medium and third and short, where the 3 sets let you show Counter and Power Run and then hit the play action rollout when the linebackers trigger downhill

Save I Form and Strong I for genuine short yardage and clock burning, not first and ten, because 18 plays across two sets is not enough variety to survive repeated exposure to a keyed defense

Go to Goal Line Offense inside the two with FB Dive and HB Blunt Dive, but sub a receiving back into 23 personnel first so you retain a checkdown if the front crashes

On third and long, motion a receiver out of a 10 personnel Shotgun set to identify man or zone pre snap, then hot route the backside to a sideline concept like DBL Outs against man or work DBL Post against a single high shell
