The diagram shows the four receivers running vertical stem routes to clear out the second and third levels while the offensive line executes down blocks with the backside guard pulling to trap the first defender outside the play side tackle. The HB takes the handoff and reads the trap block, looking to squeeze the hole created by the pulling guard before bouncing outside if the alley is sealed. Primary read progression is guard pull, then hole created by the down blocks, then cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive tackle alignment before the snap, since a 3 technique or shaded DT is exactly who the trap block is designed to kick out. If linebackers are stacked tight behind the line at under five yards depth, expect a fast flow to the trap hole, so a user linebacker who stays home and reads the pulling guard can blow this play up. Look for edge defenders squeezing hard down the line, since that closes the cutback lane and forces the back into a low gain. A slanting front that crashes toward the play side pre-snap can beat the trap scheme by having the DT shoot the gap before the guard arrives to kick him out. Post-snap, if the safety reads run fast and fills the alley, the RB has no bounce lane, so user a linebacker to spy the guard pull and take away the primary crease.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains without tipping run.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for a shaded defensive tackle or 3 technique on the play side, since a light box makes the trap block on the DT easier to spring.
If the defense stacks the box with 7 or 8 defenders, motion the receivers with a pre-snap shift to see if the defense adjusts, then bail to a play-action pass like PA Deep Out if they overcommit.
Pair this with Jet HB Power and Jet HB Split Zone earlier in a drive so the trap block and pulling guard action look identical to those misdirection runs, forcing linebackers to hesitate.
Use the HB Dive from this set as a quick changeup once the defense starts keying on the guard pull, since the mesh point look is nearly identical pre-snap.
