Breakdown

Under Z Curl aligns out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex with 11 personnel, showing a curl route from the Z receiver working back to the sticks over the middle while the outside receiver on that side runs a deep corner to clear space underneath. On the backside, the slot receiver runs a deep post to stretch the safety vertically while the RB releases out of the backfield on a wide flat/whip route to the boundary, giving the quarterback a built in checkdown. This is a zone beater designed to attack the void between the linebackers and the underneath zone defenders, with the primary read progression starting on the Z curl, working to the post if a safety bites, and checking down to the RB flat route versus heavy underneath coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the safety depth: a two high shell with soft corners tells you the curl and post windows will be open. Watch the middle linebacker's drop after the snap since a shallow drop to the curl area kills that read and forces you to the post. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with the corners playing off, the curl will sit down right in the zone for an easy completion. Man coverage with no safety help over the top means the post can hit big, but watch for a user controlled safety lurking to jump the throw. Blitz looks with the linebackers crashing the line signal an immediate check to the RB flat route for a safe outlet against pressure.

Usage Tips

Look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap since the curl sits right in the soft spot of the zone drop.

If the corner shows outside leverage and the safety rotates late, throw the post on the backside before the window closes.

Use the RB flat route as your answer versus blitzes since it gets the ball out fast and picks up positive yardage against pressure.

Hot route the curl into a hitch versus man coverage matchups where your Z has a clear speed advantage to speed up the throw.

Pair this play with Stick Spacing and Shallow Cross in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and intermediate zone attacks from the same formation look.
