Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex that opens with jet motion across the backfield to sell the outside run threat before the QB fakes the handoff. Off the fake, the design shows a vertical seam route from the inline TE up the middle of the field and a flat route breaking outside toward the sideline, giving you a high low stretch between the intermediate zone and the boundary. The backside route works underneath from left to right, crossing the field to give the QB a checkdown or man beater against trailing defenders. Primary read progression starts with the seam route up the middle, then works to the flat, with the underneath crosser as the last resort against zone leverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety shell means the seam route has less help over the top and becomes the priority throw. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up to defend the jet fake, the middle of the field opens for the vertical seam route immediately. User the middle linebacker or a rover defender to sit in the seam window and take away the primary read, forcing the QB to work down to the flat. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with a deep defender sitting in the seam zone shut this play down hard, since the vertical route runs right into help. Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs when you have already established the actual Jet Sweep and Jet HB Power runs so linebackers bite on the fake and vacate the intermediate zone. Read the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash toward the jet motion, the seam route up the middle will be wide open behind them. Against man coverage, hot route the underneath crosser into a speed out to create instant separation from a trailing defender. Against a two high safety shell, prioritize the flat route since the seam will likely have a deep safety sitting on top of it. Pair this call with Jet Sweep and Jet HB Split Zone earlier in a series so the defense keys jet motion as run, then punish overaggressive linebackers with this play action shot.
