Breakdown

Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex that opens with jet motion across the formation to sell the outside run threat before the quarterback fakes the handoff. Off the play fake, the design shows a deep vertical seam from the inline tight end attacking the middle of the field, with the backside receiver working a shallow drag underneath at the sticks that gives the quarterback a quick outlet if the seam is not open. This is a play-action shot play built to punish teams that bite on the jet motion and crash run support downhill, with the primary read progression going seam first, then working down to the underneath drag.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers stepping up hard on the jet motion post-snap, that is the key indicator this play will hit the seam for a big gain. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the tight end's seam route is the shell that gets exposed the worst by this concept. Zone defenses that keep both safeties deep and force the quarterback to check down to the drag route shut this play down and limit it to a short gain. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking underneath in the middle of the field, since that defender can jump the seam route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Cover 3 with the middle linebacker sitting in the seam hole is the toughest shell to attack with this concept, so have a hot route ready to convert the seam runner into a different angle if you see that alignment pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when the defense has shown run blitz or aggressive box fill tendencies against jet motion. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties cheating toward the motion man's side, expect the seam to be open once the fake holds the linebackers. Hot route the shallow drag receiver into a deeper crosser against zone shells that sit soft and stay square post-snap. Pair this with Jet Sweep and Jet HB Power earlier in a series so the defense keys the jet motion as a run threat, then hit them with this shot play once they start crashing hard. Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge, since the play fake eats up time you do not have against pressure.
