Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and linebackers at the snap. If they crash down hard on the jet motion or bite on the run fake, the deep TE route and crossing route will be wide open behind them. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets torn apart by the deep crossing route since defenders in phase will get picked or lose their man during the run fake reaction. A disciplined Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell that keeps defenders deep and lets linebackers sit in their zone drops takes away the intermediate crosser and forces the checkdown to the shallow drag. Blitz-heavy fronts with a spy or extra rusher timed to the play-action fake can collapse the pocket quickly, since the deep routes take time to develop and the QB has to hold the ball. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking underneath the crossing route or jumping the shallow drag, since that is the most common way good defenders bait this concept and take away the easy completion.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are geared up to stop the run, since the jet sweep fake is more believable and linebackers will flow hard. Check pre-snap for single-high safety looks or run-blitz alignments with linebackers crashing downhill, both of which get exploited by the play-action fake. If the defense shows two-high shell or is clearly playing pass, consider audibling to an actual run play like Jet HB Power or Wide Zone instead to keep them honest. Hot route the shallow drag into a quick option route against man coverage if you see the defense bringing extra pressure off the edge. Pair this with the real Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet from the same set earlier in a drive so the defense overreacts to the motion, then hit them with this play-action shot once they start jumping the fake. Protect the QB by keeping the TE in as a check-release blocker if you anticipate a heavy blitz look, since the play design already asks the offensive line to hold up on a slower-developing shot play.
