HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex, using a weak side zone blocking scheme where the offensive line steps in unison to the weak side while the TE and flexed WR release upfield to occupy defenders on the perimeter. The lone route on the diagram shows the HB taking a downhill angle toward the weak side gap behind the zone flow, reading the frontside double team before pressing to the cutback lane if the backside defenders overcommit. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and beat overaggressive gap shooters, with the primary read progression starting at the frontside double team block then working to the backside cutback lane based on linebacker flow.
Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if the weak side backer sits shallow and flows hard to the play call it beats one gap fits and light boxes cleanly. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under front with the SAM crashing the backside gap, since a disciplined backside contain defender can blow this play up before the cutback lane forms. Look for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, which signals a run blitz or crashing edge that this weak side zone concept can exploit with a quick cutback if the user does not stay home. If the defensive line is stunting or slanting hard to the play side, expect penetration that kills the frontside double team, so be ready to bounce outside instead of forcing it inside. Man coverage on the flexed WR and TE releases usually means fewer eyes in the box, making this an ideal counter to nickel or dime packages that sell out for pass defense.
Check the box count before the snap and only call this against six defenders in the box or fewer for the best angles. Use pre-snap motion or a hot route on the flexed receiver to check the corner alignment and confirm you are not walking into an overloaded weak side blitz. If the defense shows a hard shade to the play side, use the L2/LT modifier to bounce the run outside once you see the frontside double team get movement. Pair this with HB Slam and Inside Zone Split in the same set to keep the defense honest on gap reads without changing your presnap look. Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Y Middle Screen or PA Boot Slide off the same run action later in the drive.
