Breakdown

HB Slam is a downhill gap run out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex that sends the HB through the strong side A or B gap behind a lead blocking scheme designed to seal the interior defensive line and get a double team on the play side DT. The TE stays attached to the formation to help wall off the edge or add a second body at the point of attack, giving this run a heavier gap scheme feel rather than a zone stretch. This is a run play, so the primary read is the mesh point between the play side guard and center, with the HB reading whether the double team creates a crease inside or if he needs to bounce off the double team to the play side edge.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with the mike linebacker creeping to the line pre-snap, this signals a run blitz that can beat HB Slam before the double team forms. Check safety depth, if both safeties are sitting at 8 yards or deeper in a two high shell, the box is usually light enough for this gap run to hit clean. Look for defensive tackle alignment on the play side, a shaded nose or three technique that lines up directly in the play side gap can blow up the double team and force a cutback. Post snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard and fills the gap immediately without hesitation the defense likely diagnosed the run from formation tendency or a user controlled defender is spying the mesh point. Man beater blitzes and run commit fronts with edge defenders crashing inside are the toughest matchups for this play, while base 4-3 and 3-4 looks with normal gap spacing are where HB Slam consistently produces positive yardage.

Usage Tips

Use HB Slam on early downs when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders since the gap scheme relies on winning double teams up front rather than out leveraging extra defenders. Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if the mike and will are sitting shallow and stacked tight to the line, motion the TE or HB to bait a run blitz confirmation before the snap. Pair this play with 0 1 Trap and HB Zone Wk in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect multiple gap and zone run looks out of the same personnel, which slows down defensive line stunts and second level flow. If the defense keys run and starts crashing hard downhill, sequence into PA Boot Slide or PA Y Middle Screen from the same set to punish overaggressive linebackers. Against odd front looks with a nose tackle shaded to the play side gap, consider hot routing the fullback or using a different run in the set since the double team may not develop cleanly.
