Jet HB Power is a gap scheme run play out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex with jet motion across the formation before the snap to draw the defense laterally and create a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The line pulls the backside guard through the hole while the play side blockers down block, sealing off interior gaps for the ball carrier to follow the puller. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the ball carrier's job to press the hole off the puller's block and cut off the down blocks based on how the second level linebackers flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth and alignment before the snap since stacked linebackers who crash down hard on the jet motion are vulnerable to the cutback lane once the puller seals the edge. Identify if the defense sends an extra man into the box pre-snap, since a heavy box with six or seven defenders can outnumber the blocking scheme and blow up the play at the mesh point. Key on the play side defensive end and outside linebacker reaction to the down blocks, since a hard crash inside opens the edge for a bounce read while a contain rush forces the ball carrier to stick with the puller through the interior gap. User controlled defenders flowing hard with the jet motion man can be baited into overpursuit, so look for lurking linebackers who stay home and read the mesh point instead of following the fake. This run play is neutral against both man and zone coverage since it lives or dies on the box count, so a stacked front with quick-flowing linebackers and disciplined edge defenders is the best way to shut it down.
Usage Tips
Use the jet motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone pre-snap, since defenders following the motion man across the formation confirm man coverage and open up cutback lanes on the backside. Call this on early downs or short yardage situations like third and one or fourth and one where the gap scheme power blocking can win physically at the point of attack. Pair Jet HB Power with Jet Sweep and PA Jet Sweep from the same set so the defense has to respect the jet motion every snap, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits. Mix in Zone Fake Jet and Inside Zone Split to keep the same motion look while changing the blocking scheme, which punishes defenses that key on the puller. Against aggressive fronts that crash hard to the play side, be ready to bounce the run outside since the puller can adjust to cutback lanes if the initial gap is clogged.
