Wide Zone out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex is a pure outside zone run play with the offensive line flowing laterally to seal edges and create a cutback lane. The diagram shows the HB taking a wide zone path behind the line, reading the blocking flow from the play side edge back to the backside cutback lane rather than any predetermined hole. This is a zone run play with no route concept or play-action element, and the primary read progression is the HB pressing the edge first, then working backside if the frontside gets sealed or overpursues.
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check safety depth, this play struggles badly against run blitz alerts with an extra defender cheating into the box. Key the playside linebacker flow, if he overruns the play chasing the zone action, user the backside defender to cut off the cutback lane. Watch for a shaded 3 technique or 4i defensive tackle, this alignment can blow up the frontside zone block before it seals. Spy or user control the middle linebacker in man coverage looks, since Wide Zone exploits linebackers who bite hard on outside zone flow. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with an extra hat in the box are the best answers to this run, while single high shells with light boxes get gashed by the cutback.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since Wide Zone loses efficiency against stacked eight man fronts.
Use the right stick to manually press the playside edge before committing to a cutback, this manipulates linebacker flow and opens the backside crease.
Pair this with Jet Sweep or Jet HB Power out of the same set to create misdirection tendencies that freeze linebackers on the actual Wide Zone run.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses honest against Counter Y and HB Toss from the same personnel.
Avoid calling this into predicted run blitzes with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap, since the zone blocking scheme needs time to develop its seal.
