Jet HB Split Zone is an inside zone run out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex with jet motion added across the formation to threaten the perimeter before the snap. The offensive line blocks inside zone while the split flow blocker crosses the formation to seal the backside edge, giving the HB a true one cut zone run through the front side gaps. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and force the defense to honor the jet motion, so the primary read progression starts with the play side cutback lane before working backside if the split blocker gets the edge sealed.
Watch for linebackers flowing hard with the jet motion before the snap, since overcommitting to the fly action opens the cutback lane the HB will exploit. Identify safety alignment pre-snap, as a single high safety often means a light box and a green light for this zone run. Key the backside edge defender post-snap, since if he crashes down the split zone blocker will kick him out, but if he stays home the cutback disappears. This run struggles against gap sound fronts with disciplined linebackers who stay square and do not chase the motion. Look for defenses that blitz off the edge or send extra run support to the play side, as heavy pressure fronts can beat the blocking scheme before the zone lanes develop.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to avoid running into a stacked front.
Use the jet motion to bait linebackers into flowing hard to the fly sweep action, which opens the backside cutback lane for the HB.
Pair this with Jet Sweep and Jet HB Power from the same set so the defense cannot key on motion direction and jump the run.
Against defenses that show aggressive edge defenders or crashing DEs, trust the split zone kick out block and stick to the frontside gap instead of forcing a cutback.
Call this on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations where linebackers are likely to bite on run action, setting up Zone Fake Jet or PA Jet Sweep as counters later in the series.
