HB Dive out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex is a straight downhill run play that attacks the interior of the defense with the offensive line blocking a standard dive scheme. The diagram shows the tight end and both receivers held in as blockers or non-factors at the snap, keeping the box numbers manageable and letting the interior line get hats on the defensive tackles and Mike linebacker. The primary read progression for the HB is to press the mesh point behind the center and guard, then bounce to whichever gap the defensive tackles vacate based on their shade.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the Mike linebacker's depth at the snap since a shallow drop means he is keying the dive and will fill the gap quickly. Identify whether the defensive tackles are shaded into the A gaps pre-snap, which tells you which side the natural cutback lane will open on. This play struggles against gap-scheme run blitzes where both defensive tackles crash inside simultaneously, since there is no fullback or extra blocker to account for extra rushers. It beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that play read-and-react technique rather than attacking gaps aggressively. Keep an eye on safety alignment since a single high safety with no extra run support in the box confirms this play has a favorable numbers advantage before the snap.
Usage Tips
Use HB Dive on early downs when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders to keep the run honest before opening up your pass concepts. Check pre-snap for defensive tackle alignment since a 3 technique shaded away from the play call gives your dive back a clean lane through the opposite A gap. Pair this play with Jet HB Power and Jet HB Split Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect both interior dive action and edge motion looks off similar formations. If the defense is stacking the box with an extra linebacker or safety, check the run and audible into Stick Spacing or Shallow Cross to attack the vacated coverage. Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages with both linebackers crashing downhill since there is no lead blocker to clean up penetration.
