Breakdown

Inside Zone Split lines up out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex with 11 personnel, showing a single back offset behind the QB with the playside TE tight to the formation. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison toward the play side to create movement and seal off a run lane while the fullback or TE works a split flow action away from the play. This is a run play built on gap discipline and double team combo blocks at the point of attack, with the primary read starting at the frontside double team and working through the linebacker fill before bouncing outside if the alley is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front and check whether the linebackers are stacked over the play side guard or tackle, heavy fronts to the play side will clog the intended lane. Watch the safety alignment, single high shells give the offense a numbers advantage in the box while two high shells often mean an extra defender crashing down to fill. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill into the line the ball should bounce to the edge, if he sits and reads the run can stick inside. User controlled defenders flowing to the mesh point or a Mike linebacker sitting in a run fit lane are the biggest threats to this play. Nano blitz packages and gap exchange stunts on the play side can blow this up quickly, so avoid calling this into heavy blitz looks with defensive tackles slanting hard into the zone track.

Usage Tips

Run this against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts where the defensive line is not stacked heavy over the play side gap. Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if the Mike is sitting tight to the line expect a quick fill so be ready to bounce the run outside. Use the split action to hold backside pursuit, this is especially effective against aggressive defenses that key hard on the running back at the snap. Pair this with Wide Zone and HB Zone Wk in the same play calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on one blocking scheme, this keeps linebackers honest and slows their run fits. On third and short or first and ten, call this early in a series to set up PA Y Middle Screen or PA Boot Slide later since the zone steps sell the run fake hard.
