Tight Y Off Flex is the compressed-to-balanced hybrid inside Singleback, and it splits the difference between a heavy inline look and a true spread set. You get 11 personnel with the tight end aligned off the ball as a flexed Y (usually to the strong side, just outside the tackle box), one receiver tight to the formation, and a receiver flexed wide to the weak side. That off-ball alignment is the whole point: the Y is not sitting on the line where a defensive end can chuck him, so he releases clean into the flat, the seam, or across the formation on drive and shallow concepts without ever getting rerouted at the snap.
Where other Singleback sets force you to choose between run integrity and route depth, this one keeps both live. The tight formation strength gives you real down blocking angles for Counter Y, Jet HB Power, and 0 1 Trap, while the flexed weak-side X stays isolated against a single defender on the backside. That isolation is the read you want against Cover 3 and single-high man: check the safety rotation pre-snap, and if the weak side is uncovered deep, your X on an Under Z Curl or the backside dig from Rams Pivot Dig is your primary. Meanwhile the Y off the ball can be motioned to reveal man or zone before you ever snap it.
The jet motion package (Jet Sweep, PA Jet Sweep, Zone Fake Jet, Jet HB Split Zone, Jet HB Power) is what makes this set a nightmare on the sticks. Every jet look uses the same pre-snap motion, so the defense has to honor the sweep, the play-action off it, and the interior run out of the identical shell. Pair that with PA Y Middle Screen and PA Boot Slide and you have a full constraint game built off one motion, which is exactly how you keep a user linebacker from sitting in the hook window all game.
Motion the flexed Y before the snap on every passing play, even when you do not need it. If a defender mirrors, you have man and you go to Smash Hammer or the pivot in Rams Pivot Dig. If nobody follows, it is zone and you attack the curl and dig windows.
On second and medium against a single-high shell with the box loaded, run Counter Y or Jet HB Power toward the tight side and let the down blocks work. The alley defender is usually cheating to the jet motion, which means the pulling lineman has a clean path.
Against heavy interior pressure, go to PA Y Middle Screen or 0 1 Trap. Both punish crashing defensive tackles and mugged linebackers, and the trap in particular resets an opponent who keeps sending A gap heat.
Third and long: run Rams Pivot Dig or PA Deep Out and hot route the isolated weak-side X to a fade or corner. That gives you an iso rep against whatever cornerback is left over on the backside with no help.
Set up the jet package early with an actual Jet Sweep hand off, then come back to Zone Fake Jet and Jet HB Split Zone in the same drive. Once the user chases the motion, the inside zone track opens up and the split zone kick out seals the backside.
