Counter Y out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex is a power run play built to attack the edge with pulling linemen. The backfield action shows the HB taking a counter step before hitting the hole behind the pulling guard and lead blocker, while the three vertical routes upfield are window dressing to hold the defense honest against the run. This is a run play designed to attack gap integrity, and the primary read progression starts with the play side double team at the point of attack, then works to the pulling blockers leading through the hole for the HB to find the crease.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment: stacked or crashing linebackers can be gashed by the counter action if they overcommit to the initial flow. Look for safety rotation into the box, which signals run support and can clog the cutback lane. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker: if they stay disciplined and read the counter step rather than crash upfield, they can blow up the pulling blockers. User controlled defenders sitting in the hole or flowing hard to the play side call are the biggest threat to this run, so a patient cutback is essential when the backside is left unblocked. Base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts without extra edge defenders are the most vulnerable, while heavy blitz packages that send extra bodies through the backside gap can blow this play up before the pullers get set.
Use this out of run heavy personnel packages on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest. Watch the defensive front pre-snap: if the defense is in a 4-3 or shows a heavy box with linebackers crashing downhill, counter run away from the initial flow can gash them for explosive yardage. Take manual control of your lead blocker or pulling guard right at the snap to seal the edge defender and create a clean lane for the HB. Pair this play with Inside Zone Split and HB Slam in the same set to keep linebackers guessing between zone and gap schemes. Against aggressive user blitzers, this counter action can freeze defenders who bite on the initial backfield flow, so patience on the cutback is key.
