HB Toss out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex is a perimeter run play that pitches the ball to the HB and sends him wide toward the edge, away from the interior line. The offensive line and TE flow laterally to seal the edge and reach block outside linebackers and DEs, creating a wall for the HB to run behind while the backside is left unblocked to sell outside flow. This is a pure run play with no pass option, and the primary read is the HB's aiming point off the edge blocks, bouncing outside if the edge is sealed or cutting back inside if defenders overpursue and blow up the edge.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers who play with fast edge discipline, since they will string this play out and force a minimal gain. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange or edge contain blitz, as this eliminates the cutback lane and forces the HB into a pile. Look at safety depth and alignment before the snap, a safety cheating down into the box is a strong indicator the defense expects an outside run and will fill fast. Post-snap, key on the play side linebacker's pursuit angle, if he overruns the toss action there is a natural cutback lane developing behind the sealed blocks. This play is countered hard by defenses that user the play side DE or OLB to sit and read instead of crashing, so avoid calling it into aggressive edge-setting fronts.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for light edges or a safety cheated into the box before calling this play, since toss struggles against fast flow defenses with disciplined edge setters.
Use the right stick to manually control the lead blocker if available and seal the first defender off the edge, this often springs the cutback lane.
Pair this play with Inside Zone Split or HB Dive to keep the defense honest on interior gaps, then hit them with Toss when they start cheating linebackers inside.
Run this on early downs or in short yardage situations near the goal line where a fast edge defender can be exploited before the defense adjusts with extra run support.
Sequence this with Jet Sweep or Jet HB Power from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple edge run threats and cannot key on toss action alone.
