Stick Spacing out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex is a classic Stick concept married with spacing routes on the backside. The play side shows a flat route from the TE, a stick/hitch route sitting down just past the sticks, and a corner route breaking outside from the slot, while the backside receiver runs a shallow drag across the field and the RB releases to the flat as a checkdown or pass protection outlet. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by stretching the underneath defenders horizontally and vertically with quick, high percentage throws. Primary read progression starts with the stick route in the flat-to-seam window, works to the corner route if the flat defender sits low, then checks down to the shallow drag or RB underneath.
Pre-snap, look for two safeties split evenly which signals Cover 4 and softer flat defenders, or one deep safety which signals Cover 3 and a rotating corner. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker responsible for the stick route, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes he can undercut the throw for a user pick. Watch for nano blitzes disguised pre-snap that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the quick game in this concept helps neutralize blitz pressure if timed correctly. Man coverage with no help over the top on the corner route is where this play struggles most, so if you see press man alignment on the outside receiver expect the stick and drag to be the only clean options. Zone defenders sinking too deep on the corner route leave the flat and stick routes wide open, so track linebacker depth at the snap to anticipate where the soft spot in the zone will be.
Use this play on third and short to third and medium when you need a reliable underneath answer against zone coverage.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 by checking safety depth and corner alignment, this play thrives when there are soft underneath zones with only one deep defender flowing to your side.
Hot route the flat route to a quick out if you see a linebacker sitting directly on top of the stick route to open up the throwing lane.
Pair this with Under Z Curl or Shallow Cross in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between quick game and intermediate crossing routes.
Use play action variants like PA Boot Slide off similar formation looks to freeze linebackers before coming back to this quick-hitting concept on a later down.
