Smash Hammer out of Singleback Tight Y Off Flex is a classic Smash concept built to attack Cover 2 shells. The outside receiver runs a quick hitch while the slot receiver and Y both push vertical then break into corner routes, stacking the deep third and forcing the flat defender and safety into a high low bind. The lone back runs a check release swing out of the backfield for a checkdown outlet, and the inline blocker cuts up the seam. Primary read progression starts with the corner route against the cornerback and safety leverage, works down to the hitch if the cornerback sits low, and finishes with the swing route as the safety valve versus pressure.
Look for two deep safeties splitting the field evenly at snap, that shell tells you Cover 2 is live and the smash concept is designed to punish it. Watch the cornerback's initial jump, if he sinks with the corner route the hitch is open, if he sits on the hitch the corner route behind him is the answer. Key the flat or curl to flat defender's depth, a shallow drop means he is jumping the hitch and the corner route wins over the top. Beware disguised Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the safety rotates down late, that extra defender in the deep third can undercut the corner route and force you to the swing route check. Watch for a blitz off the edge or a nano blitz look, since the swing route and check release from the back are built to counter pressure by getting the ball out quickly.
Diagnose the deep safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting at 10 to 12 yards this is your green light since the corner routes will split them and create a natural throwing lane.
Attack the flat defender with the hitch route first if the cornerback shows hard outside leverage, this opens up the smash window underneath before the corner route even develops.
Use the swing route as your answer versus any pressure look, it releases fast and gives you a built in escape valve when the protection breaks down.
Pair this call with Stick Spacing or Shallow Cross earlier in a series so the defense has to respect quick game before you dial up the corner shots.
Best used on second and medium or third and short to medium where defenses are more likely to sit in Cover 2 zone shells rather than roll into man coverage.
