To the boundary, the outside receiver runs a vertical go route while the inside receiver stems into a quick out at the sticks, giving you a two level man beater on that side. To the trips side, the near slot runs a wheel route out of the backfield area up the sideline while the two receivers to the outside execute a curl and flat combo underneath, creating a smash concept with the wheel adding a vertical layer behind it. The primary progression starts with the boundary out and go for a quick isolation win, then works to the trips side reading flat to curl and finally the wheel as the deep answer against zone.

Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety depth and alignment, since a single high safety indicates man or Cover 3 which favors the wheel route beating linebackers in coverage. Watch the flat defender post snap, if he widens to the flat route the curl behind him opens up as an easy completion. Key the boundary corner leverage before the snap, outside leverage invites the out route while inside leverage opens the go route for a shot play. If the defense shows Cover 2 with two deep safeties, the wheel route is your best answer since it stretches the flat defender vertically and forces the safety to make a difficult overlap decision. Beware disguised blitzes from depth, since the concept relies on quick timing throws and a delayed pressure package can disrupt the quarterback before the wheel fully develops.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify if the defense shows a two high shell or single high look, since this concept has answers for both man and zone coverage.

Against man coverage, key the boundary out route first since it creates instant separation off a quick out cut against off or press corners.

Against zone coverage with underneath defenders sitting on curl and flat, look to the wheel route as your explosive play answer since it attacks vacated deep sideline space.

Use this play on early downs to test coverage shells before dialing up shot plays like Go's Y-Under or Mtn Dagger later in the drive.

Pair 617 with Stick N Nod or Curls from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between quick game and deeper zone beating combos.

On third and medium, prioritize the flat to curl read on the trips side since it provides a built in sit down window against zone drops.
