PA Comebacks is a play-action passing concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with 11 personnel that attacks the perimeter with a four-man comeback and pivot combo. Both outside receivers run comeback routes breaking back to the sideline at intermediate depth, while the two inside receivers work an inside seam-to-corner route on one side and an in-cut over the middle on the other, creating a full-field stretch off the run fake. The RB stays in to help sell the play-action fake before the QB works the field, with the primary progression starting outside to the comeback routes and working inside to the crossing route if the corners sit deep.
Read the corners at the snap, if they open their hips and run with the vertical stem they are susceptible to the comeback break for an easy pitch and catch. Watch for zone drops from Cover 3 or Cover 4 defenders sinking too deep, that leaves the comeback window wide open at the sideline. Key the play-action linebackers, if they bite hard on the run fake the inside crossing route will have a soft spot to work into behind them. Man coverage with press corners is the toughest matchup for this play since the comeback needs separation off the top, expect contested throws against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz packages. User-controlled safeties rotating late can jump the comeback route, so hold the throw an extra beat if you see late rotation to the deep half.
Use this out of obvious run down and distance like 2nd or 3rd and short to sell the play-action fake and freeze linebackers.
Check pre-snap for single-high shells since deep comebacks punish corners playing off in Cover 3 or Cover 1 without safety help over the top.
Hot route the backside comeback into a hitch or speed out if you see hard outside leverage from the corner jumping the route.
Pair this with Curls or Digs H Option in the same set so defenses cannot sit on the comeback break after seeing it once.
Use PA Read or RPO Peek Slant as a changeup call to keep linebackers from crashing downhill once they start biting on the play-action fake.
