Mtn Mesh Dig out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot brings a classic mesh combo underneath with two receivers crossing low across the middle while a third route sits down on a dig just past the mesh point to give the quarterback a natural pick read. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep corner and the other works a comeback breaking back to the sideline, stretching the field vertically and horizontally to punish man coverage that tries to chase through the mesh traffic. This is a man beater at its core, built to create natural rubs and separation against man defenders, with the primary read progression starting on the mesh crossers underneath before working to the dig sitting down in the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest green light, the mesh will create natural traffic that springs someone open underneap. Watch for a linebacker or safety sitting in a lurk technique in the shallow middle, that defender can jump the dig route if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Cover 3 zone with a hard sinking middle linebacker can clog the dig read, so be ready to check down to the mesh crossers instead. If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, expect the corner route on the backside to be tightly covered, so lean on the mesh and dig combo underneath. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can disrupt this play's timing quickly, so identify pressure looks pre-snap and consider using a quick hot route or checking to a faster developing concept.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and medium to third and long when you expect man coverage since the mesh concept is designed to rub off defenders and create free access underneath.

Check the cornerback alignment pre-snap, if you see tight press man across the board this play is money because the crossers will naturally pick off trailing defenders.

Hot route the dig runner to sit deeper against zone shells if linebackers are sinking into the passing lanes, giving your QB a bigger throwing window.

Combine this with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn H Shallow Cross earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying underneath crossers, then hit them with the corner route on the backside once they start jumping the mesh.

Against blitz-heavy defenses, get the ball out quickly to the mesh routes since the dig takes longer to develop and can get you hit if the protection breaks down.
