Breakdown

Corner Strike is a two receiver route concept out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot with both outside receivers running mirrored corner routes off the top of the diagram, while the two inside receivers run shallow drag routes underneath that cross toward the middle of the field. The QB has protection in the backfield with the RB releasing on a check into a flat option based on the diagram's blue route. This is a man beater concept, since the corners stretch cornerbacks vertically and horizontally while the drags create natural rub picks against man coverage, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route to the side of your choice, then works down to the underneath drag as a checkdown against tight coverage.

Defensive Reads

Check safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety indicates man or Cover 3 which this play is designed to exploit with the corner routes stretching the sideline. Watch the flat defenders and outside cornerbacks at the snap, if they sink deep with the corner route immediately look to the drag routes crossing underneath for an easy completion. Two deep safeties pre-snap signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which can shut down the deep corner throw since there is help over the top, so plan to check down quickly. Be alert for a user controlled defender dropping into the deep quarter or lurking the corner route, especially in Cover 4 shells, since this is where the play can get picked off if thrown late. If linebackers show blitz depth at the line pre-snap, expect pressure to disrupt the timing of the corner routes, so be ready to get the ball out on the quicker drag route as a checkdown.

Usage Tips

Attack this play against single high safety looks where cornerbacks are playing tight man coverage on the outside receivers, since the corner routes will win against trail technique.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 1, both are vulnerable to the corner route beating the flat defender or the deep third defender if the safety cheats to the opposite side.

Use motion or a hot route on the drag routes to speed them up if you are facing a Cover 2 shell, turning this into a quicker underneath completion rather than forcing the corner throw into two deep safeties.
