Defensive Reads

Identify man coverage shells pre-snap by checking corner alignment. If he stays disciplined and does not bite on the crossers, the mesh point gets clogged and forces a checkdown or the wheel route. Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect man coverage, since the mesh point is designed to create natural rubs against man defenders trailing the crossers.

Check the flat and hook defenders pre-snap. If you see two safeties deep with man coverage underneath (Cover 2 Man or Cover 1), the mesh crossers should come open quickly against trail technique.

Motion the backfield player or use a hot route on the out breaking route to a hitch if you diagnose hard zone coverage sitting underneath, since zone defenders can squeeze the mesh point and jump the crossers.

Watch the middle linebacker depth before the snap. If he is sitting shallow near the line, expect him to widen with the crossers and open a throwing lane for the wheel route out of the backfield.
