Breakdown

Read Option out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot is a true zone read run play with four wide receivers stretching the field to remove extra defenders from the box. The QB reads the mesh point with the RB, keying the play side defensive end to decide between the give and the QB keep, while the offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme that flows toward the play side. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and attacking downhill defenses, with the primary read being the backside edge defender determining hand off versus pull.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, if he is crashing hard on every snap the offense will pull and keep, so contain him with a spy or edge defender who stays home. Stack the box with a linebacker on the mesh point read to force a bad decision from the QB before the ball is even snapped. If the defense shows a two high shell with off corners, this run play is live since there is no extra run support, so bring a safety down into the box pre-snap. User the backside linebacker to close the cutback lane since zone blocking schemes are vulnerable to an unblocked defender crashing across the formation. Blitzes up the middle can blow up the mesh point timing, forcing a rushed decision from the QB and a negative play if the interior line collapses fast enough.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this against six or fewer defenders in the box since the four wide receiver look should have pulled extra defenders out to cover.

Watch the play side defensive end during the mesh point read, if he crashes down on the RB pull the ball and get to the edge, if he sits wide hand it off for the interior lane.

Use this against aggressive user defenders who fly downhill on run fakes since the zone read naturally punishes overpursuit.

Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so the defense has to respect both the give read and a quick pass read off the same line motion.

Best on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages.
