Breakdown

Double Slant Swing out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot fires both outside receivers on quick slants that cross the middle while the slot receiver runs a swing route out of the backfield area to the flat, and the TE releases on a deep corner-breaking route up the seam. The backfield stays in with the RB checking release on a short flare to the opposite flat for a built-in outlet. This is a man beater concept designed to punish inside leverage and press coverage, with the primary read progression starting on the frontside slant, working through the second slant across the field, and checking down to the swing or flare if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with linebackers playing tight underneath is the biggest vulnerability, the crossing slants create natural rub traffic that man defenders struggle to fight through. Cover 3 with a hard sink from the flat defender can take away the swing route, so key the underneath zone defender to see if he widens with the swing man or stays in his throwing lane. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow crossing lanes, this is the most common way good competitive opponents shut down both slants at once. Blitz-heavy zero coverage looks are dangerous for the offense here since there is minimal protection depth, so identify pre-snap if the defense is bringing extra rushers and be ready to get the ball out fast to the flare or swing. Cover 2 shells with safeties sitting high leave the intermediate crossing routes open, but watch the corners for outside contain on the flat routes since disciplined zone corners can undercut the swing route timing.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short or second and medium when you need a quick access throw against man coverage.

Pre-snap, check for man alignment by looking at CB depth off the line, if corners are showing hard outside shade the slants will have plenty of room to work underneath.

Motion the slot receiver before the snap to confirm man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can lock onto the first slant.

Hot route the RB to a quick flare control if the defense shows a heavy blitz look, this gives you an immediate answer to beat pressure off the edge.

Pair this play with Double Slant or Quick Slants in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing on which side the slant window opens, then mix in HB Swing as a tempo changeup once the defense starts jumping the slant routes.
