Breakdown

Smash is the classic high low concept run to both sides of the field out of Spread Y-Slot. To the left, the outside receiver runs a corner route stretching the sideline deep while the slot receiver underneath sits down on a quick hitch, creating a vertical stretch on the corner and safety. To the right, the mirrored concept has the outside WR breaking on a corner and the tight slot receiver running a quick hitch/curl underneath, giving you the same read on the other side. This is a classic Cover 2 beater since the deep corner routes attack the seam between the cornerback and safety while the hitches sit in the void underneath, and the primary read progression is high to low on either side depending on which safety cheats toward the corner route.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap safety depth and alignment because a two high shell signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which Smash is designed to attack with the corner route over the top. If the cornerback presses at the line, expect man coverage and prioritize the hitch route for a quick underneath completion before the corner can recover. Post-snap, key the flat defender or cornerback drop, if he sinks to cover the corner route immediately, the hitch sits wide open in the void behind him. Be wary of user controlled safeties who rob the corner route from a deep middle third look, since this can bait a costly interception if you force the throw without checking the safety leverage. Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating over the top can take away the corner route entirely, so if you see a single high safety shifting toward your route side pre-snap, be ready to check down to the hitch or reset to another concept.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify which side has the single high or two deep safety shell since Smash is designed to exploit Cover 2 hard corners who jump the hitch and get beat over the top by the corner route.

If the cornerback sinks with the corner route, the hitch underneath becomes wide open for an easy completion, so work your primary read fast and take what the defense gives you instead of forcing the deep ball.

Use this play on second or third and medium distance since it gives you both a quick underneath option and a explosive shot play depending on the coverage look.

Pair Smash with quick game concepts like Quick Slants or Stick N Nod on early downs to set up defenders biting on underneath routes, then come back to Smash when you see the defense sitting on short routes.

Against man coverage, look immediately to the hitch route since it creates natural separation on the break, and if both cornerbanks play tight man, consider hot routing the slot receiver into a deeper route to attack any linebacker in coverage.
