Breakdown

Bubble Screens is a double screen out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot that throws quick bubble routes to both the left and right slot receivers, with the outside receivers on each side stalk blocking to spring the bubble man. Both screens develop symmetrically, giving you a run pass option style read to either side of the field before the snap based on numbers and leverage. This is a horizontal screen play designed to beat aggressive man pressure and overload blitzes, since the ball comes out fast and relies on blockers winning in space rather than a route stem beating a defender vertically. The primary read progression is presnap: identify which side has the better blocking numbers or softer flow, then throw off your first read at the snap with almost no second level progression needed.

Defensive Reads

Watch for corners playing outside leverage or bailing into deep zones presnap, since that alignment invites the bubble throw with a clean lane. Zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with flat defenders sitting soft will struggle to close space fast enough, making this a strong zone beater. Man coverage with press corners and no underdefender help is where this play hits hardest since the stalk block wins immediately at the snap. Watch linebacker depth and flow, if a linebacker is scraping hard to the flat or a slot corner is disguising blitz, that side of the bubble becomes a low value throw. Cover 2 with hard flat corners and a sinking linebacker, or any defense that spys the bubble with a user controlled defender crashing outside, will shut this play down and force you to check to the other side or hold the ball.

Usage Tips

Presnap, count defenders near the box on each side and throw to the bubble with the numbers advantage or the widest cornerback alignment.

Use this play on early downs or obvious blitz downs when you expect man pressure, since the quick throw negates a nano blitz or overload rush before it develops.

If the defense shows a hard corner blitz or slot cornerback pressed tight with no help underneath, get the ball out immediately rather than holding for a blocker to set up.

Pair this with HB Draw or RPO Peek Slant from the same formation so the defense has to respect the perimeter threat and cannot key run fits without leaving the bubble open.

Vary the side you throw to based on film tendencies so defenses cannot jump the route with a flat foot linebacker or sim blitz look every snap.
