Mtn Double Post

Breakdown

Mtn Double Post is a man beater built out of the Spread Y-Slot Shotgun set that attacks the middle of the field with two vertical post routes stacked to overload one deep defender. Both posts work to collapse the safety help while underneath options occupy the flat and hook zones, giving the quarterback a natural high low read on the safety's leverage. The primary progression starts with the safety's rotation: if he bites on the first post, work the backside post immediately, and if the middle of the field stays clogged, check down to the shorter option before the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Read the free safety pre-snap, if he is aligned in the deep middle in a one high shell he becomes the primary conflict defender you are attacking with the two post routes. Watch for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the middle hook zone, since a heads up user player can jump the inside post and blow up the timing of this concept. Identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells before the snap, since two deep safeties can each take a post and shut down the entire concept without needing extra help. Key the corners' press alignment at the line, if they are playing outside leverage in man coverage the post routes have a clean angle to separate, but if they sit inside they can undercut the break. Watch for disguised blitzes off the edge, since a nano blitz or overload pressure package can force a quick decision before either post route fully develops downfield.

Usage Tips

Check the safety depth before the snap, if he is sitting at 8 to 10 yards in a single high shell this play has a much better chance to hit the second post once he commits to the first. Use motion or a quick glance at the corner alignment to confirm man coverage, since both posts need a step of separation to work against a true man beater design. Hot route the underneath option into a shallow drag or flat route if you are facing heavy Cover 3 zone drops, this gives you a checkdown when both posts are blanketed. This play hits best on second and medium to third and long when defenses respect the run and stay in nickel personnel rather than loading the box. Pair Mtn Double Post with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn Dagger in your play calling sequence, since both share the vertical shell read and will condition defenders to bite on the wrong route, opening up the double post for explosive gains later in the drive.
